RAF Broadwell

Today we decided to visit the site of RAF Broadwell located near Kencot Oxfordshire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Broadwell RAF Broadwell was a RAF transport command airfield which opened in November 1943 so quite late on in the second world war. It had three runways based in a triangular pattern (Only a part of one runway survives today as part of a bridleway route) the base was used by RAF 512 and 575 squadrons flying Douglas C47 Dakotas and Horsa gliders. More information about the aircraft can be found at the links below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airspeed_Horsa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_C-47_Skytrain The base was closed in March 1947 so was very short lived. Today part of the site has been used for a solar farm comprising of some 144.000 panels and one of the largest in the UK.  Wychwood area walk Part 1 The walk we took this time was the Wychwood Walk no5 Finstock - Ramsden from the website www.wychwoodproject.org  a 5 mile walk through woodland across fields and through the villages of Finstock and Ramsden. The weather turned out to be perfect with the sun shining and blue skies but not too warm. The walk starts off by the school in Finstock but you are quickly off the beaten path and passing through a large set of fields and then into Topples Wood (pics below). After the woods you end up in the small village of Wilcote passing the large manor house on your right. The next stop was Ramsden which is a lovely village with the Royal Oak pub that thankfully was open so some chips and pints were had. www.royaloakramsden.com   The next part of the walk was through Ramsden and up mount skippet and circle back round through Finstock back to the car. I would recommend this walk as its easy going with few hills.
