RAF Broadwell

Today we decided to visit the site of RAF Broadwell located near Kencot Oxfordshire.

RAF Broadwell was a RAF transport command airfield which opened in November 1943 so quite late on in the second world war.

It had three runways based in a triangular pattern (Only a part of one runway survives today as part of a bridleway route) the base was used by RAF 512 and 575 squadrons flying Douglas C47 Dakotas and Horsa gliders.

More information about the aircraft can be found at the links below:

The base was closed in March 1947 so was very short lived.

Today part of the site has been used for a solar farm comprising of some 144.000 panels and one of the largest in the UK.

Surviving features, as mentioned above a large section of one runway still exists with a car part and information/viewing platform, also the control tower survives in a neighboring field.

On the way to the site we also noticed this burnt out (Piccaso?)
